(1990) in Counselor Education from Virginia Tech. He has worked in a variety of settings including a federal prison, a mental health center, a job training program, and now in higher education.
At Radford University, he works with college students entering internships or preparing for graduation and entrance in the workplace. Through individual coaching sessions, workshops, and classroom presentations he helps students develop the emotional intelligence skills they need to be effective in the world-of-work. He is planning a senior-level course that will teach emotional intelligence skills to graduating seniors.
His current research focus is on two main areas: emotional intelligence training for students transitioning from college to the workplace, and the quantitative and qualitative assessment of emotional intelligence. John’s research has resulted in five published books for practitioners on EI topics including The Life Skills IQ Test: 10 Self-Quizzes to Measure Your Practical Intelligence; The Self-Esteem Program: Inventories, Activities, & Educational Handouts; The Social Skills Program: Inventories, Activities, & Educational Handouts; The Stress Management Program: Inventories, Activities, & Educational Handouts; and The Anger Management Workbook: Self-Assessments, Exercises, & Educational Handouts.
He has published a number of scientific articles on emotional intelligence, and he frequently conducts national and international workshops on assessment-related topics, career development, and emotional intelligence. He is also the author of seven career counseling and job search assessments that are used in schools, businesses and community agencies around the world. His latest assessment, the Job Survival and Success Scale, helps people become more emotionally intelligent as they transition from school to the workplace. In addition to his research interests, John consults with a wide variety of organizations on topics such as lifeskills program development, lifeskills IQ training, and assessment development.
John resides in Radford, Virginia with his wife Kathy, and their Shih Tzu named “Delilah.”
